Short Biography
Born in Adana in 1976, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Direkli graduated from Adana German Anatolian High School and then completed his undergraduate degree in International Relations at Gazi University in Ankara. He completed the preparatory year for his master's degree at California State University, Fullerton, and received his Master of Arts (LL.M) degree in European Law from Saarland University Faculty of Law in 2004. He began his professional career in 2005-2006 as an expert in European ___Union___ Law at the Center for Turkish Studies in Essen, Germany. From 2007-2009, he served as the international representative of California State University, and from 2010-2011, he was the Turkey representative of the Carl Duisberg Centre in Germany. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Vienna in 2014. From 2015-2024, he served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Law and International Relations at the International Cyprus University, and from 2018-2023, he served as the Head of the Department. Between 2024 and 2025, Direkli taught as a Visiting Professor at the Department of International Politics at the University of Vienna. During the same period, her research project, supported by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), focused on "Opportunities for Transitional Justice in the Context of the Ongoing Conflict and External Intervention in Syria." Direkli currently serves as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law at Cyprus Aydın University. She has numerous national and international academic publications, including articles published by prestigious publishing houses such as Cambridge University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, and Taylor and Francis (SSCI, Q1 Q2). Throughout her career, she has lectured in the fields of International Law, European Law, Maritime Law, and International Organizations. Direkli is a member of the Austrian branch of the International Law Association (ILA) and the European Institute (Europa-Institute EVER e.V.).
